Conservation and Planning

Owning a traditional property within the Pollokshields conservation areas is a privilege but also a responsibility. This section aims to provide some guidance for home owners.

If you are thinking of carrying out maintenance or making alterations to your property, it is important to get advice, understand the planning process for a Conservation Area and carefully consider planning guidance documents before starting.

For advice and guidance on the maintenance of a traditional property visit Conservation Advice.

For some details of the planning process that apply to properties within the Conservation Areas visit Planning Advice.

The Trustees of Pollokshields Heritage regularly review planning applications within Pollokshields and when it is considered appropriate, submit comments. These comments are visible on the Glasgow City Council (GCC) Online Planning Portal. For further information concerning the GCC Online Planning portal visit Planning Advice.

Information and news relating to planning applications within Pollokshields can be found on our News page.

For energy conservation of traditional buildings the Historic Environment Scotland (HES) Short Guide Fabric Improvements for Energy Efficiency and INFORM guide entitled Improving Energy Efficiency in Traditional Buildings are worth reading.

Draughts from a chimney flue can be considerable, so to prevent these an inflatable plastic ‘chimney balloon’ or a wool ‘chimney sheep’ can be used – refer to HES INFORM guide to Domestic Chimneys and Flues.

Mature trees are an important element of the West Pollokshields Conservation Area’s landscape and contribute to its special character.  Pollarding, unsympathetic pruning or cutting down can have a serious impact on both the area’s character and biodiversity.

See under GCC Planning for the process required prior to any proposed tree work.

Is my property in a Conservation Area?

There are two conservation areas that cover most of Pollokshields, East Pollokshields Conservation Area and West Pollokshields Conservation Area. Details are provided on the Glasgow City Council website.

Is my property a Listed Building?

Both the Historic Environment Scotland and Glasgow City Council websites have maps to help you search for listed buildings. The HES website shows the details and category (A, B or C) of each listing.

Conservation Area Appraisal Documents

See ‘Further Reading’ below for links to the Conservation Area Appraisal documents, for both conservation areas. The appraisal documents for each area show the area boundaries, appraisal overviews of the areas plus other useful information.  GCC states that;

‘The purpose of a Conservation Area Appraisal is to define what is important about the area in terms of character, identity and appearance and to identify its important characteristics. It identifies the area's special features and changing needs through a process which includes researching its historical development, carrying out a detailed townscape analysis and preparing a character assessment.’
