Miller & Lang Stained GlassThis three storey commercial building is one of the hidden gems of the Glasgow style. Built in 1902 by D B Dobson of architects Gordon & Dobson. Sadly missing its original exuberant projecting clock, the building’s character is revealed through unusual details - the dragon shaped down pipe, the mermaid supporting the oriel bay, and topped by Minerva goddess of the Arts. The entrance has large double doors, with oculi, Art Nouveau handles and escutcheons. The real magic resides in the richness of the first floor offices with exotic Art Nouveau stained glass by W G Morton. The themes are various: The Birth of Venus, Neptune, Father Time, Father Christmas, Mother and Child, even Death; and may relate to the greetings cards the firm produced. An important building of European stature, and an unexpected treat!
