The KnoweThomson’s earliest surviving villa amongst the first feued in the new garden suburb, and extended in stages over subsequent decades. Dating from 1852 the villa was built for John Blair hat and cap manufacturer. It predates Thomson’s mature trabeated style where he rejected the curve of the arch in favour of the mysterious power of horizontal. Carefully composed around tower with belvedere. Entrance porch with curious reverse entasis columns. The villa demonstrates Thomson’s mastery of the picturesque Italian style. A later billiard room extension of 1899 by J C McKellar matches Thomson’s style externally but with Art Nouveau details and Parthenon frieze inside. Delightful coach house of 1856 echoes the villa in miniature. Original gates and gates posts.
