In 1895 the contractor John Morrison commissioned architects Thomson and Sandilands to build this flamboyant Baronial villa as his own residence. Morrison was the contractor for Glasgow City Chambers and several other prestigious Glasgow buildings. The scale of the house, with its grand central staircase top lit by stained glass panels, gives an idea of Morrison's wealth The 4-storey bartizaned tower is a prominent Southside landmark. From its style you would not guess that it is by the son of 'Greek Thomson'. During the Second World War, the house was taken over by the Admiralty and used for training purposes, referred to locally at the time as 'the ship that never sailed'.
