Beith-born mechanical engineer Andrew Stevenson Biggart played a prominent role in the construction of the Forth Rail Bridge. As resident engineer and general manager of William Arrol & Co., he played a key role in the development and construction of the world famous bridge from its inception through to its completion in 1890. Subsequently he was made a partner of the firm and undertook many other bridge building and engineering contracts throughout the country. When Sir William Arrol & Co. became a limited liability in 1893 he became a director and succeeded to the chairmanship on the death of Sir William Arrol in 1913. He was a member of the Institute of Civil Engineers. convener of the Committee on Engineering of the Royal Glasgow Technical College and a Justice of the Peace.
