Pollokshields Heritage

Chimneys are an important feature of rooflines and stacks visible from the front of buildings should be retained with repairs or replacements matching the original in size, design and materials. Sometimes a substitute material might be acceptable, such as reconstituted stone or tinted cement render coursed to resemble stonework etc, but for the most part repairs should be made in stone.

Planning permission may be required if repair work would result in an alteration of the appearance of the chimney.

Except on listed buildings, chimney stacks at the rear may, if required. be reduced in height, but the existing coping should be reinstated, or replaced with a matching one.

Only on unlisted buildings will consideration be given to the removal of redundant chimneys which do not form part of visible rooflines, but owners should remember that such works require prior Conservation Area Consent (see Demolition).
